HEPAMERZ contains l-ornithine-l-aspartate which belongs to the group of medicines called hepatoprotective agent. It is used in the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy. Hepatic encephalopathy is defined as a series of neuropsychiatric abnormalities in patients with liver dysfunction, after exclusion of brain disease. It is characterized by intellectual impairment, personality changes and a depressed level of consciousness. HEPAMERZ can also be used to treat hyperammonemia as a result of acute and chronic liver diseases such as liver cirrhosis, fatty liver or hepatitis.
L-ornithine-l-aspartate is made up of two amino acids called ornithine and aspartic acid. They stimulate ammonia detoxification by increasing the synthesis of urea in the liver. Before taking this medicine, inform your doctor if you have severe liver disease, because your doctor might adjust the infusion rate on an individual basis to avoid nausea and vomiting.

LIVER
HEPAMERZ should be taken with caution in patients with severe liver disease. Consult your doctor for advice. Dose adjustments has to be made on individual basis to avoid nausea and vomiting.
ALLERGY
Do not take this medicine if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to l-ornithine-l-aspartate. INTERACTIONS Tell your doctor about all the medicines you use, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, and herbal supplements.
